Wait: Isn’t that place famous?

Overheard on a street corner, as folks walked by, noticing that they were within a stone’s throw of Hemingway’s historic haunt. It’s now a noisy bar (maybe it was then a noisy bar) full of tourists buying t-shirts with Papa’s scowl emblazoned on the front. The remark struck me from several angles: (a) who decides what makes a place famous? And how come people don’t make pilgrimage to where Hemingway got his hair cut? (b) does being in famous places rub off on visitors in some way? (c) what are good reasons for travel? More questions than answers today…
